Literacy Project with Cinco Books: helping displaced children

Literacy Project with Cinco Books: helping displaced children

Mayor Potencial is excited to continue our partnership with Cinco Books to provide books, meals, and read stories to children in need.

We recently completed another collaboration in Aldea SOS. and in September 2023 we will be providing a free little library for more than 70 children in this village. In Honduras, there are only a handful of public libraries so this will be a monumental gift for the children. The goal is to do this for children’s day in September. As usual we will be providing more books and meals to all of the children.

Our first collaborative literacy event with Cinco Books took place in March 2021, and brought books, toys, snacks and smiles to 55 beautiful children. Cinco Books donated the books that were given to each child.

As of April, 2021, shelters put in place for Hurricane relief were dismantled and families were sent away to do the best they can. Some returned to where their homes were and put up tarps, some live under bridges, in dumps, or on the streets.

We will continue to bring a little ray of hope into the lives of these sweet children, by making this a recurring event, once COVID restrictions have lifted.

Food delivery at the Tegucigalpa city dump: July 2021

Food delivery at the Tegucigalpa city dump: July 2021

Mayor Potencial delivered food, juices and toys for the kids that live at the city dump in Tegucigalpa. Seniors and parents also received food. We made 200 baleadas (a traditional Honduran meal of flour tortillas, fried beans, and sour cream), and bought 100 juices. Every child received 2 baleadas and 1 juice. A total of 100 people have benefited from this delivery. There were approximately 70 children. Sadly, we were not able to help the kids from the nearby areas.

There have always been people living at the dumps, due to poverty. They often look for cans and other recyclables to sell. However, since the hurricanes hit in the fall of 2020, the number of people living there has tripled.

Once the temporary shelters closed across the country, people who lost everything had no choice but to find places like the dump or under bridges to build their cardboard and plastic homes.
